The principal elements of horror are violence and sensationalism, playing on our sense of fear, and a depiction of a malevolent supernatural. Horror utilises mood and plot, rather than gore to immerse the reader in the story, thereby creating a sense of immediacy and an impact that is visceral, rather than cerebral.
